Janet, Bruce, and Jordan Talk to Assignment X
AX: Because this topic has been discussed in other publications, including TV Guide, with shows like BONES and CASTLE, everybody’s going, “Hey, let them have a romance.” Would it be catastrophic for RIZZOLI & ISLES if they did?
TAMARO: Who’s the “they”? These two [indicates McGill and Bridges], you mean?
AX: Well, that would be a whole different issue.
TAMARO: No, Season Seven, I see it.
AX: No, the characters Rizzoli and Isles.
TAMARO: You know, my job as a writer is to make people interested and make them worry and make them want more. So am I going to answer every demand out there in the Twitter world – “Will you please do this, will you please do that?”
AX: Not in response to an external audience demand, but just, do you think it would unbalance the show if the friendship turned romantic?
TAMARO: Well, think about shows that ended once they kissed.
McGILL: Yeah. There’s something that drives a lot of shows – a lot of sitcoms as well – unresolved sexual tension. I’m sure you’ve heard of it. And it can go in many directions – there’s nothing wrong with that. But resolving it, which is once they kiss, it’s over.
TAMARO: It often is.Read the rest here.

Snarker Does 3x03
Snarker's subtext recap is up:
Maura is unveiling a very special present in the police station lobby. No, get your heads out of the gutter. Not that special of a present. Plus she only does that for Jane, and in private. Instead she’s unveiling an original, um uh – let’s just call it a sculpture. Jane astutely notes that the piece looks like “a decomposing Pinto.” Well, she’s not wrong.

Appreciating Fan Art
One of the best products of a fan's passion and creativity is the art they create based on their passion. Jane is cooking in the kitchen while the men watch sports. That is the most wrong sentence I’ve ever typed in the history of wrong. But, alas, these are the things our Det. Jane Rizzoli must do now that she is on the outs with Dr. Maura Isles. It’s like the entire balance of the universe is off. Up is down, white is black, butch is femme – you get the picture.

We Got This Covered did a recap:
Regardless of whether Rizzoli was right in shooting Doyle, Maura is still fiercely upset by the circumstances laid out before her. After all, earlier in the finale last year Maura’s mother was hit by a car that was meant for Maura and now her father is also in the hospital for trying to protect her.

TV Over Mind has a review:
Alexander wrings every fear and hope of an adopted child seeking information from a biological and adoptive parents with haunting in her eyes and restrained expression that breaks your heart. Harmon's reactions to her perceived betrayal by love interest, federal agent Gabriel Dean (Billy Burke), reflects the pain of every speed bump felt in a relationship that has gone off course. With their characters' relationship strained beyond the breaking point, Harmon and Alexander exude the despair of losing one's best friend with both ferocity and poignancy.

What Culture has a review:
We open immediately after the events of last years season 2 finale. Detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) has just shot down wanted mobster Paddy Doyle (John Doman), biological father to Rizzoli’s best friend, colleague and chief medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander). One of the many great things about this season opener was just how well the Jane/Maura rift was handled. I didn’t find myself siding with one and feeling annoyed at the other for starters. I can see Rizzoli’s viewpoint – Paddy had a gun and she was doing her job. I can also see things from Maura’s side – she’s hyped up and pretty devastated after both her mother and father end up in hospital critically injured. Like Korsak (Bruce McGill) said, “she’s in shock.” I bet she was.

Entertainment Gather has a little taste of what we should expect tonight:
Rizzoli & Isles season 3 continues next week with episode 2, "Dirty Little Secret." While Jane and Maura's friendship is still on the rocks, both are back at work where they should be. Will this episode help fix things?
"Tensions continue to mount between Jane and Maura, causing those close to them to be caught in the middle. But they must put aside their differences when they investigate the case of a college student who died in a tunnel. Meanwhile, Frankie Sr. (guest star Chazz Palminteri) returns with news that upsets Angela. Colin Egglesfield also guest-stars."

Snarker Reviews 3x01
Snarker's first subtext review of 3x01 is up.
When last we left our intrepid homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and adept medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles things were – oh, let’s not beat about the bush – things were bad. Like deep doo-doo, there is no card from Hallmark that can fix this, I am sleeping on the couch until the next millennium bad. Or, as Jane succinctly puts it, “I just shot my best friend’s father.” I’d replace “best friend” with “lady lover whose lady bits I love to love,” but you know – semantics.

Basically, what we're seeing here is that, for a season premier of a very popular show where the premier happened on a new night and different time, R&I did pretty good. Also, YOU'RE WELCOME FRANKLIN & BASH!
Tuesday was a good night for TNT. In Rizzoli & Isles‘ first outing in the Tuesday 9pm time-slot (after airing at 10pm on Wednesday nights for the past two seasons) the drama series set a new record as basic cable’s #1 Tuesday premiere ever for an original scripted drama series with 5.6 million total viewers, 1.5 million of those viewers in the 18-49 demo (a 1.2 rating) and 1.9 million viewers in the 25-54 demo. The show’s third season premiere was down 12.5% in total viewers, but was steady in the demo, compared to the show’s second season premiere. However, Tuesday’s numbers are more or less level with the averages for the shows second season (5.9 million total viewers/1.1 A18-49 rating) and posted gains of 87% and 57% compared to the second season premiere of Memphis Beat (3 million total viewers/0.7 A18-49 rating) which aired in the same time-slot last season.

Just to show consistency of opinion on the show's ratings, here is what the Starr Report on the New York Post had to say about it:
It’s my pleasure, then, to tell you that TNT’s “Rizzoli & Isles” snared 5.6 million viewers in its third-season-premiere Tuesday night — a . . . wait for it . . . basic-cable record for a Tuesday-night premiere of an original scripted drama series (you can exhale now). That was down a bit from last July’s season’s premiere (6.4 million viewers) but in line with what “R&I” averaged last season (5.9 million viewers).

TV Line also agrees:
Rizzoli & Isles copped very good numbers for TNT in its Season 3 premiere on Tuesday, opening the night with 5.6 million total viewers, and 1.54 of ‘em falling into the coveted 18-49 demo range.
While that’s down 12 percent in total audience from R&I‘s sophomore opener — which led out of the TNT hit The Closer, on a Monday — it marks increases of 86 and 64 percent from what Memphis Beat did in the Tuesday leadoff spot last summer.

Reviews/Recaps for 3x01
TVFanatic.com has their review up:
Everything seemed to go wrong for Jane Rizzoli in the season premiere of Rizzoli & Isles.
"What Doesn't Kill You" picked up exactly where the season finale left off. Right at the scene where Jane shot her best friend's biological father.
Unfortunately, Jane was fixated on the fact that Paddy Doyle was a mobster wanted in connection with about 15 murders. Not that she shouldn't have been. She's a cop. That's her job. But perhaps she could have toned it down a bit for her best friend who believed her biological father was only their to protect her. Calling Maura naive and ignorant was pretty harsh given the circumstances.

ETOnline Talks to Sasha
Check out what Sasha said to ET:
Read the rest here.
ETOnline: One of the things people talk about the most regarding Rizzoli & Isles is the relationship between the two women -- Is it friendship? Is it love? What do you make of that?
Alexander: Art is subjective. We all have the right to watch it and think what we want. It's up to you to decide if we have chemistry in a way that is sexually enticing. If you look at a relationship that has any layers for some reason, in our society, that immediately relates to sexuality. Why? You can't be friends with someone in this way without thinking there's sexual chemistry? Me and Angie have a great relationship, my husband says we look hot together so I get it. I think the important thing is that people relate to it. At the end of the day, if someone can relate to it individually than great.
ETOnline: It's almost one of those things where the assumption says more about the person than the show, you know?
Alexander: I agree with you. When the show launched, that was the last thing we ever expected. The great thing is our gay and lesbian fanbase is huge and we love them. They are a big portion of our audience but then we get fan mail from 15-year-olds saying how much they love the show and are inspired by seeing women who can pursue a field that is more male dominated.

The Trades Review of 3x01
The Trades reviews 3x01 (full article here):
The writers at Rizzoli & Isles like to always leave us wondering if there will be a team at the end of a season. The first season closed with Detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) being shot. Last season, Rizzoli is the one doing the shooting, and the target she hits is Paddy Doyle (John Doman) -- wanted mob boss, and biological father to her best friend, Medical Examiner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander). Was it self-defense? Did Jane react without reason?

That’s one of the reasons “Rizzoli & Isles” has become one of the best cop shows on TV.
It works as light summer drama, with lots of great banter between the women, and it works as cop drama, since it has put both of them in very dangerous situations at regular intervalsThe Huffington Post has a video clip of Angie on the View defending Jane's actions in 2x15 (full article here):
"She's a homicide detective. And here's the kingpin of the Irish mob who's shot -- a man she happens to be sleeping with -- and a federal agent. And has put them all in danger,” she said.
Bruce McGill talks to AVClub.com (full story here):
Rizzoli & Isles (2010-present)—“Det. Vince Korsak”
Bruce McGill: Obviously a great role for me, because it’s ongoing. Usually I’m a single-shot guy. Feature films are beginning, middle, and end, and “goodbye, thank you for working with us, you’re done.” [Laughs.] So this is very interesting. It evolves.
The first thing I really enjoyed about it was Korsak’s relationship with the dog. That, and the fact that I’ve known Angie Harmon for a long time, and I enjoy her, so it’s great to work with her.Angie talks to xfinity.com about season 3 (full article here):
Does Jane feel guilty about shooting Maura’s father, or does she believe she was just doing her job?
Of course, she feels guilty. She shot her best friend’s father. But on the other hand, let’s not forget, Paddy is the king of the mob, he shot a federal agent and he had a gun pointed at Jane. What would you do if you were in Jane’s situation and a trained homicide detective? Would you just stand there and wait to see if he is going to pull the trigger, or would you just go ahead and act, especially after he shot one of your colleagues, who you happen to be sleeping with.
SeattlePI Reviews the Premier (full story here):
"You guys will make up."
That's what Korsak (Bruce McGill) tells Jane (Angie Harmon) on the Season 3 premiere of Rizzoli & Isles (Tuesday, 9/8c, TNT) about her fractured friendship with Maura (Sasha Alexander).
He may be right, but it looks to be a long road back for the former BFFs. Maura still feels betrayed that Jane shot her estranged father, crime boss Paddy Doyle (John Doman), in the Season 2 finale after having promised that she wasn't going to do anything. That surely can't be something that is forgiven in one episode, right?Satelliteradioplayground.com tells us about BookExp 2012 and Tess. Check it out here.
Sasha Alexander becomes more than just Angie Harmon’s partner in ‘Rizzoli & Isles’

“It’s a huge ride for Maura this season,” says Alexander. “The whole mystery of her father and his past is changing her. She’s always lived in this world where she’s in control of everything, and now it’s another world she’s uncomfortable in.”
Maura’s also mad at Jane.
“She’s in total shock as the season starts,” says Alexander. “She’s very angry at Jane. It’s going to take a while for them to find their way back.”

USA Today talks R&I
Angie and Sasha talk to USA Today about Season 3:
"The further we move into the series, the more it reflects the fact that we do represent women in a way that's unique," Alexander says. "So I'm proud to be part of a show that has smart women who are professionals, who are independent, who are good people, who are supportive of and respect each other.
...
Says Harmon: "I've said from the first season that Maura and Jane together make a really extraordinary woman. Separately they're amazing, together they are extraordinary."

Sasha & Angie Talk Season 3
The two took time to talk to TVLine.com
“We start Season 3 maybe 20 minutes later, so the anger is still fresh, the resentment of [what Jane did],” Sasha Alexander tells TVLine of tonight’s premiere (airing at 9/8c). “For both Jane and Maura it’s very unclear – like, What just happened?”
So, things are a little complicated between the ladies? “I would say a lot,” Angie Harmon corrects us with a laugh. “But if you’ve ever had a fight with someone that you love or care about, this is the show for you. It’s very high stakes that these two are fighting for.”

Sasha Talks to the Huffington Post
There's a fun, light interview with Sasha over at the Huffington Post:
Fans seem to really want you all to do a musical episode, a la "Grey's Anatomy" or "Buffy." Would you consider it?Oh my gosh, I would so love to! I was a dancer, Angie's a great dancer ... there's no reason that the two of us shouldn't be dancing away. I'd love it. I don't have a really good voice, though -- Angie does. So I could back-up dance, somebody from "Glee" could maybe sing for me, and I'll be doing the Roger Rabbit.
[Laughs.] It's the same as having a butt double -- you'll have a singing voice double. And you know what? I'm totally good with a butt double. That and boob doubles are fantastic. [Laughs.]

They’ll need something equally as dramatic to bring the two back together, and in episode 2, the duo gets trapped in a car with water rising around them. “Maura is very, very hurt, so Jane has to do surgery on her in order to help her not lose her leg. It’s pretty intense,” Alexander says. “They really earn their way back.”

Angie Talks Season 3
Xfinity managed to do a very brief interview with Angie:
Find the rest here.
“Obviously, as humans we are who we are to our core,” Harmon said in an exclusive interview with XfinityTV.com. “As we go through emotional situations, depending on what your makeup is, and how you react to it, that is who you are. Maura goes back to being her scientific, all-kinds-of-useless-information, hilarious self. That certainly comes back. Don’t worry. We get our Maura back.”

I think it’s pretty clear that the two women are each other’s primary intimate partner, even if they are straight.

Sasha Speaks About "The Gay"
The Advocate.com spoke to Sasha, and what she had to say made our hearts beat faster:
You can read the rest here.
There seem to be subtle winks to the show’s lesbian fans, like Jane goes undercover at a lesbian bar, the episode where you’re in bed and Jane asks Maura, “Are we having a sleepover, or is this your way of telling me you’re attracted to me?” All those little insidery winks that lesbian fans always pick up on.
Well, I think that if Jane were open to it, I think Maura would absolutely experiment because she’s just a little bit more open-minded in that way. But Jane would never. She’s so straight.
Jane doesn’t even like to hear you talk about the people that you’re attracted to. She’ll say, “I’m gagging in my mouth now.”
Yeah. It’s true.
When the show premiered it set a record as the highest-rated debut for a commercial cable series and I think the second-highest for basic cable all over. Do you think the ratings would drop if Maura or Jane did come out as gay?
I don’t think so. I really don’t think so.
Have you ever played the Rizzoli & Isles lesbian drinking game?
[Laughs] I haven’t. I do know of it and I would like to play it but I haven’t.

Janet and Season Three
Janet Tamaro sat down with the Huffington Post to answer a few questions about the show:Q: What are you most excited about this season?
A: I'm really excited about the stories. I'm also excited by the fact that we've seen all of these characters, particularly Jane and Maura, evolve onscreen. They have more complex flavors and are more nuanced this season.

A Quickie About Angie
Alternative career: A Homicide detective. “I did a lot of research for Jane [Rizzoli], going to Boston, to crime scenes and being there amongst the blood and the gore and the death. I like puzzles, in general, there’s always one on the dining room table. That just seems to me the ultimate puzzle with the highest stake possible.”

R&I is a Must See
The Norwich Bulletin's "Geek Guide" has listed 20 "must see" shows for this summer. Guess who made the list!
“Rizzoli & Isles” – Season 3
Return Date: Tues. June 5 at 9pm on TNT
When the woman cop drama, “Rizzoli & Isles” first premiered it looked as though it would be another procedural cop drama, however as the first episode proved, the show was much darker than the average procedural drama. However, while “Rizzoli & Isles” is mainly composed of dark and dramatic plot elements, the show manages to intertwine an added underlying situational comedy plot element. After the second season’s shocking fall finale, Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and Maura Isles’ (Sasha Alexander) friendship seems to falter, while Jane also finds herself facing an internal investigation. However, Alexander teased in the latest issue of “Entertainment Weekly” that by the end of the second episode the duo’s friendship is restored after they find themselves entrapped in a car quickly filling with water. Fans prepare yourselves for another season of a look into the crazy lives of a detective and medical examiner in the city of Boston.

More Sasha Talk about Season 3
PCM-TV.com did an interview with Sasha recently:
Q: After the finale there were some worries about how the dynamic of Jane and Maura’s relationship would play out after the shooting, did you have any ideas as to how you thought Maura would react?
“Initially, the anger seemed really right. I wasn’t really sure though, I felt like after the anger she wanted to apologize to Jane but then there was a miscommunication between them and she became angrier. I think that anger leads into a better understanding of what happened at the shooting. Once they have that understanding they can make their way back to being friends. In the second episode they’re not really talking yet, but there is that humorous tension between them where they have to work together. Overall Maura reacts the way I would expect her to.”
