Snarker recaps the season finale.
If you missed this season finale, definitely make time to watch it, it’s worth it.
If walking into a fire isn’t dangerous enough, realizing someone’s waiting for you inside with some concoction to enhance the flames might be. I’ve heard that blue fire is one of the hottest flames and I think the firefighter knew that too when he looked down at his gloved hands and realized his fate. I guess the whole ‘stop, drop and roll’ thing wouldn’t really work in this case.
After the season 1 finale which was suspenseful, shocking and an hour full of action, I was excited for this episode. I don’t know about you guys but for me this episode was not as amazing as the season 1 finale was. However it was good and it certainly leaves us with one big question: What happens now with Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and Maura Isles’ (Sasha Alexander) friendship?
A warehouse catches on fire, killing a fireman in the process. As Maura researches fires in the area, the killer comes after her, and ends up running down her mother, Constance, with a car. Maura’s biological father, Patty Doyle, also shows up, but it was nice that none of this had to do with his criminal life. There have already been episodes where Doyle’s crimes and enemies have come after Maura, so while was considered as a possibility, Maura’s troubles were just a side effect of her doing her job.
In a few short weeks, the winter season of Rizzoli & Isles managed to take my favorite characters and throw them into circumstances that had alarming consequences.Remember when Jane was upset with Maura for withholding information from her about her brother? Well, that rift was nothing compared to the chasm created between our dynamic duo at the end of "Burning Down the House."
As much as the viewers expected an impressive Rizzoli & Isleswinter finale, Maura's reaction at the very end was shocking! Especially, since Jane contributed to the circumstances that prompted such reaction.
First things first, though. Billy Burke returns as Agent Gabriel Dean trying to rekindle his relationship with Jane. Despite her romance with Casey, who was Jane's morale support--much more than Dean--despite being overseas, she ends up sleeping with Gabriel.

Season in review by Crackinois
Rarely does a television show in its first season capture my attention and hold it. Rarely does a new show have such wonderful characters that I become completely wrapped up in them…truly and deeply emotionally invested. Rizzoli & Isles had so much potential in its first season. Here were two wonderful female characters that were interesting in what they were at the time, that had many directions they could be taken (particularly after the finale), and had this wonderful subtext that drew in so many LGBT fans to the show. Yes, the writing and plots in season one were a little weak, but I always try to give a new show the benefit of the doubt in hitting its stride when it’s picked up for its sophomore season.

In this episode of Rizzoli and Isles, called “Burning Down the House”, the girls are on the case of a firefighter who is killed on duty in a fire. When the evidence starts pointing away from an accident and firmly towards murder, Maura is suddenly a target herself. But the would-be killer misses in his attempt to run her down and instead nearly kills her mother. As if things weren’t hard enough, this brings her biological (and wanted felon) father out of the woodwork. The man wants to protect his daughter and maybe even tell her who her birth mother was but Maura just wants to concentrate on her real mother.
How did this ending come about?Tamaro: I decided midway through the season. It's not mandated by the network that you have to do a cliff-hanger, but as a writer, I like coming up with a good cliff-hanger. As a viewer, I hate it! [Laughs] I hate that final frame where you go, "What?! You're kidding me!" I knew I wanted to leave them at odds with each other and I knew I didn't want to do a repeat of Season 1 where there's some sort of deadly shooting cliff-hanger involving one of them. I wanted to leave the two women with some massively unresolved conflict and a conflict where you can see both sides.
